Whenever software is to be compiled from the source, it usually comes in packages <\/strong>as compressed archives <\/strong>such as .rpm, .deb, .tar.gz, etc. These packages are then extracted and then installed using a package manager<\/strong>. The \u201c.deb<\/strong>\u201d is a popular software package format used extensively in Linux\/Ubuntu. This article demonstrates the installation of a .deb file\/package <\/strong>by two popular package managers: dpkg <\/strong>and apt <\/strong>on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.<\/p>\n

<\/a>How to Install a .deb File\/Package in Ubuntu 22.04?<\/h2>\n

Dpkg and apt are two of the most popular package managers in Linux. The installation of a \u201c.deb\u201d file\/package will be demonstrated in the following sections via dpkg and apt package managers:<\/p>\n

<\/a>How to Install a .deb File\/Package via \u201cdpkg\u201d Package Manager?<\/h2>\n

\u201cdpkg\u201d delivers low-level package management, i.e., it does not check and install dependencies. In this section, we will download and install Google Chrome<\/a> using the \u201cdpkg\u201d package manager by the following steps:<\/p>\n

<\/a>Step 1: Update System Repositories<\/h3>\n

To update the system repositories, run the following command:<\/p>\n

$ <\/span>sudo<\/span> apt update<\/div><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/a>Step 2: Download Google Chrome .deb File<\/h3>\n

We can download the \u201c.deb\u201d file of Google Chrome from the link<\/a> and by clicking the \u201cDownload\u201d button:<\/p>\n

We will be re-directed to the following window, where we can select the \u201c64-bit .deb (For Debian\/Ubuntu)\u201d option and press the \u201cAccept and Install\u201d button:<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

This will start downloading the \u201c.deb\u201d file which will complete in a few seconds and the .deb file will be downloaded in the \u201cDownloads\u201d directory.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Step 3: Install Google Chrome<\/h3>\n

To install Google Chrome, first navigate to the \u201cDownloads\u201d directory via the cd command:<\/p>\n

$ cd<\/span> Downloads
\n$ ls<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n

From the above image, it can be seen that the \u201cgoogle-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb\u201d file is successfully downloaded in the \u201cDownloads\u201d folder. Next, the following command is executed:<\/p>\n

$ <\/span>sudo<\/span> dpkg<\/span> -i<\/span> google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb<\/div><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Enter the sudo password to continue with the installation process. After a few seconds, Google Chrome will be installed.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Step 4: Verification of Installation<\/h3>\n

We can verify Google Chrome installation by launching it via Ubuntu Desktop\u2019s file manager by clicking on the \u201cShow Applications\u201d button on the bottom left of the screen:<\/p>\n

We can then type \u201cGoogle Chome\u201d in the search bar and select Google Chrome Icon:<\/p>\n

After pressing the Google Chrome Icon, Google Chrome Brower will be launched:<\/p>\n

<\/a>How to Install a .deb File by Using \u201capt\u201d Package Manager?<\/h2>\n

\u201capt\u201d (Advanced Packaging Tool) is a high-level package management system and it automatically checks and downloads all dependencies related to the package. In this section, we will download and install Sublime Text<\/a> using the \u201capt\u201d package manager using the following steps:<\/p>\n

<\/a>Step 1: Update System Repositories<\/h3>\n

System repositories will be updated by running the following command:<\/p>\n

$ <\/span>sudo<\/span> apt update<\/div><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/a>Step 2: Download Sublime Text .deb File<\/h3>\n

We can download the \u201c.deb\u201d file of Sublime Text from the link<\/a> and by clicking the \u201cDownload\u201d button:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We will be redirected to the following page, where we can click the \u201cdirect downloads\u201d button:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We will be re-directed to the Downloads page, and we can select \u201c64-bit .deb\u201d:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The .deb file will then be downloaded in the Downloads directory.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Step 3: Install Sublime Text<\/h3>\n

We will navigate to the \u201cDownloads\u201d directory by cd command:<\/p>\n

$ <\/span>cd<\/span> Downloads<\/div><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

From the above image, we can see that the \u201csublime-text_build-4152_amd64.deb\u201d file is successfully downloaded, which is installed by the following command:<\/p>\n

$ <\/span>sudo<\/span> apt install<\/span> .\/<\/span>sublime-text_build-4152<\/span>_amd64.deb<\/div><\/div>\n

Enter the sudo password to continue with the installation process. After a few seconds, Sublime Text will be installed.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Step 4: Verification of Installation<\/h3>\n

We can verify Sublime Text\u2019s installation by launching via using Ubuntu Desktop\u2019s file manager by clicking on the \u201cShow Applications\u201d button on the bottom left of the screen:<\/p>\n

We can then type \u201cSublime Text\u201d in the search bar and select Sublime Text Icon:<\/p>\n

\u201c.deb\u201d file can be installed using dpkg package manager by using the syntax \u201csudo dpkg -i deb-file.deb\u201d and by default \u201capt – advanced package tool\u201d by using the syntax \u201csudo apt install .\/deb-file.deb\u201d.
