Apart from USB drives, other external devices can also be formatted or made bootable with Rufus. A Bootable USB Stick is beneficial in a variety of ways. With a Bootable Ubuntu Operating System on a USB Stick, we can troubleshoot problems in Ubuntu easily. We can easily plug and play the USB Stick and it makes our Ubuntu System Portable as well, i.e. we can use Ubuntu any time.<\/p>\n<p>This article discusses how you can create a Bootable USB Stick with Rufus on Windows.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Create a Bootable USB Stick With Rufus on Windows<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Create a Bootable USB Stick with Rufus for either Trying Ubuntu Directly from the USB Drive or installing Ubuntu from USB for its use alongside any other Operating System. The steps below explain the steps required to create a Bootable USB stick.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 1: Download Rufus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To create a bootable USB Stick using Rufus, you have to install Rufus first on your System. To Download Rufus, either visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/rufus.ie\/en\/\">Rufus Website<\/a> or open your favorite browser and then search for the Official Rufus Download page. In our case, we downloaded the Standard \u201c<strong>rufus-4.2.exe<\/strong>\u201d file:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" class=\"wp-image-22505\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-2.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-2.png 1920w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-2-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-2-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-2-1536x864.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the Rufus Application Downloads, you will see it in the Downloads Directory of your Windows OS:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1081\" height=\"155\" class=\"wp-image-22506\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-3.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-3.png 1081w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-3-300x43.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-3-1024x147.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-3-768x110.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1081px) 100vw, 1081px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click on the Executable Setup File to start the Rufus Application. In the bottom left of the Rufus Application Menu, it will inform if any USB Devices are connected to the System. In our case, the USB Drive is not connected:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"804\" class=\"wp-image-22507\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-4.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-4.png 698w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-4-260x300.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 2: Rufus Configuration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Insert the USB Stick, click on the drop-down Device menu, and see the USB Drive Device. Click on the Drive to Select it. In our case, the USB Drive is \u201cUSB (F:)\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"804\" class=\"wp-image-22508\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-5.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-5.png 698w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-5-260x300.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After selecting the USB Drive, ensure that the Boot Selection Options have the ISO Image Option Selected, and then click on the \u201c<strong>Select<\/strong>\u201d Button:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"804\" class=\"wp-image-22509\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-6.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-6.png 698w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-6-260x300.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Select Button will ask you to select the ISO File to add to the USB Stick. In our case, we have the Ubuntu ISO File:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"942\" height=\"711\" class=\"wp-image-22510\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-7.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-7.png 942w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-7-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-7-768x580.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 942px) 100vw, 942px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the ISO File is selected, leave the default configuration setting for other options in Rufus:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"872\" class=\"wp-image-22511\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-8.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-8.png 698w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-8-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now click on the \u201c<strong>Start<\/strong>\u201d Button to continue with the Bootable USB Stick process:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"872\" class=\"wp-image-22512\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-9.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-9.png 698w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-9-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 3: Making the Disk Bootable<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After you\u2019ve clicked on \u201cStart\u201d, a Warning Window pops up asking you to select the Image Mode. By default, Rufus recommends and writes to the USB Drive in ISO Image mode. Select the \u201c<strong>Write in ISO Image Mode<\/strong>\u201d and then click on \u201c<strong>OK<\/strong>\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"784\" height=\"444\" class=\"wp-image-22513\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-10.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-10.png 784w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-10-300x170.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-10-768x435.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rufus also checks for any packages or installation files that require an update. In our case, a Download Window Pops Up asking for the \u201cGrub\u201d Latest Installation files to be downloaded before making the USB stick Bootable. Select the \u201c<strong>Yes<\/strong>\u201d button if you wish to download additional files:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"562\" class=\"wp-image-22514\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-11.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-11.png 621w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-11-300x271.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before making the USB Stick Bootable, ensure that any useful data is moved out from the USB Drive. Rufus, while making the USB Drive Bootable, deletes all the existing files on the USB drive. Click on \u201c<strong>OK<\/strong>\u201d to erase the data from the USB Stick:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"618\" height=\"263\" class=\"wp-image-22515\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-12.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-12.png 618w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-12-300x128.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the USB Drive is cleaned of any data, the Bootable Drive Creation Process will start and you can see the progress in the Green Bar:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"872\" class=\"wp-image-22516\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-13.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-13.png 698w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-13-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the Process completes, you will see the default Rufus Window again with the \u201cStart\u201d button clickable again. This ensures that the USB Stick has been made Bootable:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"872\" class=\"wp-image-22517\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-14.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-14.png 698w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-14-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 4: Booting from USB Stick<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To Boot from the USB Stick Once it has been made bootable, either restart your Windows Operating System and during the Restart press the \u201c<strong>F8<\/strong>\u201d key or restart in Advanced Mode from the System Settings. In our case, we restarted from the Settings. On your Home Screen, either press the Windows Key from your Keyboard or click on the Windows Icon:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" class=\"wp-image-22518\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-15.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-15.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-15-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-15-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Application Menu appears where you will see the Settings icon. Click on the \u201c<strong>Restart Now<\/strong>\u201d Button inside the Advanced Startup Option to reboot your system now:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1022\" height=\"767\" class=\"wp-image-22522\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-19.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-19.png 1022w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-19-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-19-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Windows OS will reboot and once it reboots, it will ask to choose a Boot Option. Click on \u201c<strong>Use a Device<\/strong>\u201d to choose a USB device for booting a system:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"770\" class=\"wp-image-22523\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-20.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-20.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-20-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-20-768x578.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A list of Devices will appear, click on the \u201c<strong>EFI USB Device<\/strong>\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1022\" height=\"766\" class=\"wp-image-22524\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-21.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-21.png 1022w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-21-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/word-image-22503-21-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1022px) 100vw, 1022px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This will Boot the Ubuntu System from the USB Stick.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 5: Trying Ubuntu<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once the Ubuntu System Reboots from the USB Stick, it will ask whether you wish to \u201cTry Ubuntu\u201d or \u201cInstall Ubuntu\u201d. The \u201cTry Ubuntu\u201d option will only start Ubuntu from the USB. To Install Ubuntu alongside your Windows Operating System, click on \u201cInstall Ubuntu\u201d. The Bootable USB Drive either asks you to try Ubuntu directly from the USB Drive or install Ubuntu OS alongside Windows.
