It contains built-in tools such as Git control, syntax highlighting auto completion, and multiple panes. It is a desktop-based application, supports various plugins that are written in Node.Js and other languages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This article will describe two different methods to install the <a href=\"https:\/\/atom.io\/\">Atom<\/a> text editor on your Ubuntu 20.04 system.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Prerequisites<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>All commands must run under the root or administrative privileges.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Installation of Atom Editor on Ubuntu 20.04<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Atom Editor can be installed on the Ubuntu system by using the following two different methods:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Install Atom Editor from apt Package Manager<\/li>\n<li>Install Atom Editor using Snap<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Method 1: Install Atom Editor from apt Package Manager<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Atom is available in the apt repository of Ubuntu 20.04. So, install Atom Editor directly using the apt package manager. Open the Terminal application by pressing the keyboard shortcut keys \u2018Ctrl + Alt + t\u2019. To install Atom using the apt repository, follow the below-mentioned steps:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 1: Install dependencies<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Update the apt packages repository and then, install all the required dependencies by running the below-given command:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1085\" height=\"546\" class=\"wp-image-4170\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-80.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-80.png 1085w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-80-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-80-1024x515.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-80-768x386.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1085px) 100vw, 1085px\" \/><\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt install software-properties-common apt-transport-https wget<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1082\" height=\"792\" class=\"wp-image-4171\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-81.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-81.png 1082w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-81-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-81-1024x750.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-81-768x562.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1082px) 100vw, 1082px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The confirmation prompt interrupts the installation procedure. Press \u2018y\u2019 and then enter to install all required dependencies.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 2: Import GPG key<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>First, import the GPG key of the apt repository by executing the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>$ wget -q https:\/\/packagecloud.io\/AtomEditor\/atom\/gpgkey -O- | sudo apt-key add -<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1089\" height=\"114\" class=\"wp-image-4172\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-82.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-82.png 1089w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-82-300x31.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-82-1024x107.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-82-768x80.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1089px) 100vw, 1089px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the GPG key will import, the \u2018OK\u2019 status shows on the terminal after running the above command. It represents that the GPG key of the desired repository has been imported into your system.<\/p>\n<p>The following command activates or enables the apt repository on your Ubuntu 20.04 system:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo add-apt-repository \"deb [arch=amd64] https:\/\/packagecloud.io\/AtomEditor\/atom\/any\/ any main\"<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1094\" height=\"464\" class=\"wp-image-4173\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-83.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-83.png 1094w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-83-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-83-1024x434.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-83-768x326.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1094px) 100vw, 1094px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 3: Install Atom Editor<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once the repository is activated or enabled, type the following command to install the latest available version of Atom Editor:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt install atom<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1092\" height=\"803\" class=\"wp-image-4175\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-84.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-84.png 1092w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-84-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-84-1024x753.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/word-image-84-768x565.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1092px) 100vw, 1092px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Type \u2018y\u2019 and then press \u2018Enter\u2019 to proceed with the installation process.<\/p>\n<p>The installed version of Atom Editor can be updated through the command-line or using the Software update tool from your desktop application.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Step 4: Launch Atom Editor<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once the Atom editor is installed, launch it by clicking on the Activities and type \u2018atom\u2019 in the application search bar. Press \u2018y\u2019 and then hit \u2018Enter\u2019 in order to uninstall the Atom Editor from your system.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Method 2: Install Atom Editor using snap<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Atom Editor can also be installed using the snap package manager. It includes all the binary dependencies of all packages that are required to run an application. Once Atom installation is complete, you can start it on your Ubuntu 20.04 system. When the latest version is released of Atom editor snap will automatically update the application in the background.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The implementation of two different methods for the installation of the Atom editor is elaborated in this article.
