Based on IntelliJIDEA&#8217;s powerful code editor and developer tools, it allows to develop apps for Android-based phones, tablets, TV, etc. This guide explains how to install Android Studio on Ubuntu OS.<\/p>\n<p>To install Android Studio on Ubuntu, there are following three ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Installation via tarball<\/li>\n<li>Installation via repository<\/li>\n<li>Installation via snap<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Requirements:<\/h2>\n<p>You will require:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ubuntu OS<\/li>\n<li>A user with root or sudo access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: I will be demonstrating the procedure on <strong>Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa).<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Method # 1 Installing Android Studio via tarball<\/h2>\n<p>In this method, we will show you the installation of Android Studio using the tarball. Follow these steps for the installation procedure:<\/p>\n<p>1. Download the Android studio <strong>tar.gz<\/strong> package using the command below in the Terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>$ wget <a href=\"https:\/\/redirector.gvt1.com\/edgedl\/android\/studio\/ide-zips\/4.1.2.0\/android-studio-ide-201.7042882-linux.tar.gz\">https:\/\/redirector.gvt1.com\/edgedl\/android\/studio\/ide-zips\/4.1.2.0\/android-studio-ide-201.7042882-linux.tar.gz<\/a><\/pre>\n<p>2. Once the package is downloaded, extract it using the command below:<\/p>\n<pre>$ tar -xf android-studio-ide-201.7042882-linux.tar.gz<\/pre>\n<p>3. Then navigate to the extracted folder and run the install script as follows:<\/p>\n<pre>$ cd android-studio\/bin<\/pre>\n<pre>$ .\/studio.sh<\/pre>\n<p>After running the script, the following window will pop up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"176\" class=\"wp-image-6550\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-177.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-177.png 480w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-177-300x110.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. Choose the <strong>Do not import settings<\/strong> radio button in the above window and click <strong>OK<\/strong>. After that, the following Welcome wizard will show up. When the following window appears, choose <strong>Standard<\/strong> as Android Studio setup and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"718\" height=\"584\" class=\"wp-image-6552\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-179.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-179.png 718w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-179-300x244.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. Then based on your preferences, select <strong>Darcula<\/strong> or <strong>Light<\/strong> UI theme and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"797\" height=\"596\" class=\"wp-image-6553\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-180.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-180.png 797w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-180-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-180-768x574.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. Then you will be presented with the following window to review the settings. If you want to make any changes in the settings, click <strong>Previous<\/strong>, otherwise click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"722\" height=\"591\" class=\"wp-image-6554\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-181.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-181.png 722w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-181-300x246.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8. Now, the downloading of components will be started on your system. Follow these steps for the installation procedure:<\/p>\n<p>1. To install Android Studio, you will first need to add its repository. Use the below command to do so:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-fonville\/android-studio<\/pre>\n<p>Enter sudo password. Then press <strong>Enter<\/strong> to continue the procedure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"126\" class=\"wp-image-6558\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-185.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-185.png 830w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-185-300x46.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-185-768x117.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. After adding the repository, update the repository index using this command:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p>3. Then to install Android Studio, use this command:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt install android-studio<\/pre>\n<p>If asked for continuation, hit <strong>y<\/strong> to continue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1209\" height=\"555\" class=\"wp-image-6559\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-186.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-186.png 1209w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-186-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-186-1024x470.png 1024w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-186-768x353.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1209px) 100vw, 1209px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the installation is completed, hit the super key and type <em>android studio<\/em> in the search area. Follow these steps for the installation procedure via snap:<\/p>\n<p>1. First, check if snapd is installed on your machine. Use the command below to do this:<\/p>\n<pre>$ snap version<\/pre>\n<p>You will see a similar output if it is installed:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"317\" height=\"138\" class=\"wp-image-6562\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-189.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-189.png 317w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-189-300x131.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If it is missing from your machine, use the command below to install it:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt install snapd<\/pre>\n<p>Provide the sudo password.<\/p>\n<p>2. When the icon for the Android Studio application appears, click it to launch it.<\/p>\n<p>After opening the Android Studio application, the below window will appear. To complete the remaining procedure, follow the step 4 to step 8 described in the first method.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"176\" class=\"wp-image-6564\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-191.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-191.png 480w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/word-image-191-300x110.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Remove Android Studio<\/h2>\n<p>If you no longer require Android Studio on your machine, you can remove it easily using the following methods.<\/p>\n<p>If you have installed Android Studio via tarball, then use the commands below to remove it:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo rm -r Android*<\/pre>\n<pre>$ sudo rm -r .android\/<\/pre>\n<pre>$ sudo rm -r android-studio\/<\/pre>\n<pre>$ sudo rm \/usr\/share\/applications\/android-studio.desktop<\/pre>\n<p>If you have installed Android Studio via repository, then use the command below to remove it:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt remove android-studio<\/pre>\n<p>If you have installed Android Studio via its snap package, then use the command below to remove it:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo snap remove android-studio --classic<\/pre>\n<p>That is all there is to it! In this post, we described how to install Android Studio using three different methods. Depending on your choice, you can use any method for the installation of Android studio.
