It allows managing system administration tasks like user account creation, software installation, and up-gradation, setting up FTP or mail server, etc. right from a web interface. It is also handy for users who are not experts at the command line. In this tutorial, we will show you the installation of Webmin in Ubuntu system. The installation procedure is very simple and requires only a few simple steps.<\/p>\n<h2>Prerequisites<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ubuntu 20.04 system<\/li>\n<li>User with sudo privileges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: The commands discussed in this article have been tested on <strong>Ubuntu 20.04 LTS<\/strong> <strong>(Focal Fossa).<\/strong> The same commands are also valid for Debian distribution.<\/p>\n<h2>Install Webmin in Ubuntu<\/h2>\n<p>Webmin is not available in the official repositories of Linux Ubuntu. Therefore, to install it in Ubuntu, you will have to manually add its repository to your OS.<\/p>\n<p>Follow the below steps to install Webmin in Ubuntu:<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Add key for Webmin repository<\/h2>\n<p>Our first step will be to get the key with which the Webmin repository was signed. To do so, execute the below command in Terminal to download the key:<\/p>\n<pre>$ wget http:\/\/www.webmin.com\/jcameron-key.asc<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"957\" height=\"392\" class=\"wp-image-712\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-356.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-356.png 957w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-356-300x123.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-356-768x315.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 957px) 100vw, 957px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the key is downloaded, add it using the below command:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt-key add jcameron-key.asc<\/pre>\n<p>Provide sudo password.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cOK\u201d in the following output shows the key has been added to your system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"84\" class=\"wp-image-713\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-357.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-357.png 580w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-357-300x43.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Add repository for Webmin<\/h2>\n<p>Now, we will have to add the Webmin repository to our system\u2019s local repository. To do so, execute the below command in Terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo add-apt-repository \"deb http:\/\/download.webmin.com\/download\/repository sarge contrib\"<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"979\" height=\"433\" class=\"wp-image-714\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-358.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-358.png 979w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-358-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-358-768x340.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After adding the repositories, execute the update command to update the local repositories:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"851\" height=\"203\" class=\"wp-image-715\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-359.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-359.png 851w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-359-300x72.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-359-768x183.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 851px) 100vw, 851px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now we are prepared to install the Webmin on our system. Execute the below command in Terminal to do so:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt install webmin<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-716\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-360.png\" alt=\"Install Webmin in Ubuntu\" width=\"886\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-360.png 886w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-360-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-360-768x318.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 886px) 100vw, 886px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When asked for confirmation, press <strong>y<\/strong>, after which the system will start the installation of Webmin.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the output, the below lines will show you how to log into Webmin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"762\" height=\"92\" class=\"wp-image-717\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-361.png\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-361.png 762w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-361-300x36.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Allow Webmin in Firewall<\/h2>\n<p>If a firewall is enabled on your OS, you will have to allow Webmin through it. By default, Webmin uses port 10000. In order to allow Webmin in the firewall, execute either of the following commands in Terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo ufw allow Webmin<\/pre>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo ufw allow 10000<\/pre>\n<h2>Step 4: Log in to Webmin<\/h2>\n<p>In order to login to Webmin, open any web browser, and navigate to the following address:<\/p>\n<pre>https:\/\/&lt;localhost&gt;:10000<\/pre>\n<p>If you are trying to login to Webmin from some other system, use the following syntax:<\/p>\n<pre>https:\/\/&lt;IP-address or hostname&gt;:10000<\/pre>\n<p>In order to login to Webmin from outside the local network, you will require the public IP address. Also, it will require port forwarding configured on your router.<\/p>\n<p>Once the following login page appears, enter the username and password to login as a root or sudo user.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-718\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-362.png\" alt=\"Login to Webmin\" width=\"1021\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-362.png 1021w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-362-300x177.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-362-768x454.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1021px) 100vw, 1021px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you have logged in, you will see the following Webmin dashboard showing system information and other statistics.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-719\" src=\"http:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-363.png\" alt=\"Webmin Dashboard\" width=\"1008\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-363.png 1008w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-363-300x177.png 300w, https:\/\/linuxways.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/word-image-363-768x453.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1008px) 100vw, 1008px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Uninstall Webmin<\/h2>\n<p>In case you no longer need Webmin program installed on your Ubuntu system, you can easily uninstall it using any of the following commands in Terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo apt remove webmin<\/pre>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo \/etc\/webmin\/uninstall.sh<\/pre>\n<p>That is all you need to do in order to install Webmin in your Linux system.
