How to Install Mailspring Email Client on Ubuntu

Mailspring is an open-source desktop email client that ships with great features such as open tracking, unified inbox, templates, link click tracking, fast search, Read receipts, undo send, themes, layouts, and much more. Its unified inbox feature enables you to use all of your email accounts from a single inbox. It supports Gmail, Office 365, iCloud, IMAP/SMTP, Outlook.com, and Yahoo. Mailspring is available for Linux, BSD, Windows, and macOS. Today’s post is about installing the Mailspring email client on Ubuntu.

Note: We have demonstrated both the installation procedures on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Installing Mailspring on Ubuntu

You can install Mailspring on Ubuntu through the following ways:

  • Installation through Command Line
  • Installation through GUI

Installation through Command Line

In this method, we will be installing Mailspring on Ubuntu through the command line. Mailspring email client is available as a snap package for installation in a Ubuntu OS. To install any snap package in Ubuntu, first make sure that snapd is installed in it. You can verify it through the command below:

$ snap version

If you see the below output, it confirms that snapd is installed in our system.

If it isn’t installed, you can install it through the below command:

$ sudo apt install snapd

Now install Mailspring through the command below:

$ sudo snap install mailspring

This command will install the Mailspring email client on your system.

The output above shows that Mailspring email client version 1.9.2 has been installed on our system. You can also verify the installation of Mailspring through the command below:

$ mailspring --version

If you see the version number in the output, it confirms that Mailspring is installed in your system.

Installation through GUI

In this method, we will be installing Mailspring on Ubuntu through GUI using Ubuntu Software Center.

Click the Ubuntu Software Center icon located on your desktop.

Click the search icon to bring up the search box.

Type mailspring in the search box and hit Enter. After which, you will see the Mailspring application in the search results. Click the Mailspring application.

The following view will show up on your screen. Click the Install button.

Now it will ask you for authentication. Provide the password for authentication. Then click Authenticate button.

After authentication, the installation will be started.

After the installation is completed, click the Launch button to open the Mailspring application.

You can also launch the Mailspring Email client from the Activities menu. Hit the super key to bring up the search bar. Type Mailspring in the search bar. The icon of the Mailspring application will now display on your screen. To open the Mailspring email client, simply click the icon.

Uninstall Mailspring

If for any reason you want to remove the Mailspring email client from your system, use the command below:

$ sudo snap remove mailspring

It will then remove the Mailspring application from your system.
